On the eve of the seventh anniversary of the Rana Plaza tragedy, we solemnly remember those we have lost and those who have been permanently impaired both physically and mentally. We also remember the unprecedented community heroism in rescue, treatment and assistance of the unfortunate workers. Along with the heroism we also remember the problem of lack of quality data that wasted precious time for the assistance to reach those with the highest need. In the ongoing Corona crisis the need for quality data is again in the forefront.

The government has announced a package of Taka 5000 crore as soft loan to the export oriented factory owners to help them pay the workers salaries for a three months period. While making a list of workers is relatively easy with the exporters association sharing their member factory list, it is a much more difficult job to find the areas where they live to channel the public health intervention to that high risk community.

Mapped in Bangladesh project, an initiative of BRAC University, has come up with a worker density map of Dhaka, Gazipur and Narayanaganj districts based on the ongiong census that they are conducting for export oriented RMG factories of the entire country.
