The Digital RMG Map by “Mapped in Bangladesh” Received Mainstream Media’s Acknowledgement:

The Mapped in Bangladesh (MiB) project has been quoted on a number of reputable international media and publications in recent months. As the project approaches to cover the entire country’ export-oriented RMG factories, these references attest that the global stakeholders have started to recognize the efficacy of  such an enterprise.

On 19th March, Vogue Business published a report on the impact of Coronavirus on Bangladesh RMG industry. In order to understand the impact, the author interviewed representatives from different sections of the industry. Along with the Project Manager of MiB, the president of BGMEA, a representative from labour rights advocacy, and a factory owner have been interviewed.

The Project Manager of MiB in the interview emphasized the importance of honouring the existing contracts of the brands/buyers because cancellation of orders can have devastating impact on the industry and the workers as well.

On October 1, 2019, McKinsey & Company’s published “Fashion’s New Must Have: Sustainable Sourcing at Scale”, which mentioned the ‘Mapped in Bangladesh’ as a part of the discussion on the urgency of greater transparency.

This report was also reviewed in  an op-ed column of ‘The Daily Star’ which was published on  February 5, 2020. The title of the column was ‘Time for our apparel industry to promote its sustainable credentials’. It was written by Mostafiz Uddin, the Managing Director of Denim Expert Limited and also the Founder and CEO of Bangladesh Denim Expo and Bangladesh Apparel Exchange (BAE).

Mr. Uddin opined that the apparel industry of Bangladesh has undergone a wholesale programme of remediation under the programmes taken by Accord and Alliance. He later mentioned Mapped in Bangladesh as an initiative for a “credible” source for industry information. According to him, these processes like Accord, Alliance and Mapped in Bangladesh were the reason that the Bangladeshi RMG industry has been recognised favorably in the McKinsey report.

These high profile references of the project, reinforces the belief of the MiB team that the quest for transparency makes a remarkable difference to the RMG industry of Bangladesh.
